Overview
TrueUSD (TUSD) is a stablecoin designed to track the value of the U.S. dollar. A stablecoin is a digital token whose issuer aims to keep its value close to another asset, such as a national currency. TUSD gives people a way to hold and transfer a dollar-denominated token on a blockchain. It can move between wallets and take part in applications that accept it, while its issuance and redemption connect to banking services. (tusd.io)
The basic idea is simple: eligible customers send dollars through TrueUSD’s banking process to receive newly issued tokens, and they can return tokens to request dollars. TrueUSD publishes information about the assets held to support this system. The token’s usefulness comes from combining familiar dollar units with blockchain transfers, rather than from a changing reward rate or a fixed token supply. (tusd.io)

History & Team
From TrustToken to a new operator
TrustToken launched TrueUSD in March 2018. TrustToken itself was founded by Danny An, Rafael Cosman, and Stephen Kade. TUSD was its first product, built around the idea of linking a blockchain token to an asset held outside the blockchain. Early backers of TrustToken included Andreessen Horowitz Crypto, BlockTower Capital, and Stanford-StartX. Those firms backed the company during its early development; they are not the team that operates TUSD today. (tusd.io)
TrueUSD’s ownership later changed. In December 2020, TrustToken announced that ownership would move to an Asia-based consortium. Techteryx subsequently took over full management of TUSD in July 2023. This history matters when reading about the project: the people who founded TrustToken and the organization managing TrueUSD are parts of different stages of the token’s life. (trueusd.medium.com)
The project also developed beyond its original Ethereum release. TUSD expanded to other blockchains, and in 2023 TrueUSD added Chainlink Proof of Reserve to its minting process. Each step shaped how people could receive, transfer, and use the token. (tusd.io)
Technology & How It Works
Issuance, transfers, and reserve reporting
TrueUSD starts with a link between two systems. Dollars and other reported reserve assets exist within financial institutions. TUSD tokens exist on blockchains, where wallets can send them through token contracts. When an eligible customer completes TrueUSD’s account checks and sends a bank wire under its minting process, tokens are issued to the wallet address they provide. To redeem, the customer sends TUSD to an account-specific redemption address and receives a bank transfer through the project’s banking process. (tusd.io)
TUSD has native versions on Ethereum, TRON, BNB Smart Chain, and Avalanche. TrueUSD also lists bridged versions on networks including Polygon and Arbitrum. A native version is issued for that network; a bridged version represents tokens moved through a cross-chain system. The distinction affects which network a wallet or application must support. TrueUSD says its own app supports native versions. (tusd.io)
Reserve information links the banking side to the blockchain side. TrueUSD says Moore Hong Kong prepares daily attestations showing the state and breakdown of its reserves. An attestation reports on specified information at a point in time. Chainlink Proof of Reserve then supplies reserve data to smart contracts. Its Secure Mint design lets a minting contract check reported reserve coverage before creating additional TUSD. Public blockchains record token activity, while the reports provide information about assets held outside those blockchains. (tusd.io)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply follows issuance and redemption
TUSD’s economic model centers on its intended dollar link. New tokens enter circulation through minting, and redemption removes tokens from circulation. As a result, supply changes with use rather than following a preset release schedule or mining process. The purpose of holding TUSD is access to a transferable dollar-denominated token, not a claim on an allocation of new tokens. (tusd.io)
The token can serve several everyday roles within crypto. It can be the dollar side of a trade, a unit for sending funds between wallets, or an asset used by a compatible financial application. TUSD itself has no built-in staking reward for simply sitting in a wallet. A lending service or liquidity pool may separately offer payments to users who deposit it; those payments come from that service’s own rules. (tusd.io)
TrueUSD’s website says it charges no fee for minting and redemption. Other costs can still arise from a bank, exchange, or blockchain network. On Ethereum, for example, sending the token requires a network transaction fee. These separate costs help explain why the route used to obtain or move TUSD can matter as much as the token itself. (tusd.io)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
A digital dollar across several networks
Trading is one of TUSD’s clearest uses. An exchange can pair it with another digital asset, letting users move between that asset and a dollar-denominated token without first making a bank withdrawal. TrueUSD lists exchange integrations as a core part of its ecosystem. (tusd.io)
TUSD can also be sent directly between compatible wallets. A business or individual receiving it can see the transfer on the relevant blockchain and use the token in other supported services. Its multi-chain design gives applications on Ethereum, TRON, BNB Smart Chain, and Avalanche access to native TUSD, though each network has its own wallet addresses, fees, and applications. (tusd.io)
In decentralized finance, or DeFi, TUSD can be supplied to a lending application or placed in a liquidity pool where supported. Lending applications use deposited assets under their own borrowing rules. Liquidity pools hold pairs of tokens so users can exchange one for another. These are uses provided by outside applications, rather than features automatically attached to every TUSD balance. (tusd.io)
Advantages & Challenges
What the design offers—and what it depends on
TUSD’s main advantage is its straightforward unit of account: users can record transfers and balances in dollar terms while using blockchain tools. Several supported networks give developers and wallet users a choice of infrastructure. Daily reserve attestations and the Chainlink minting check add ways to observe how reported backing relates to tokens in circulation. (tusd.io)
The design also has practical limits. Minting and redemption depend on an operator, financial institutions, and account checks. Reserve reports describe assets held off-chain, so understanding the backing involves more than looking at a token contract. Network choice adds another layer: native and bridged versions have different transfer paths, and sending costs vary by blockchain. These features make TrueUSD a blend of blockchain software and traditional financial operations. (tusd.io)
Where to Buy & Wallets
Exchanges and supported token networks
TrueUSD can be purchased on Kraken and KuCoin, which publish TUSD purchase instructions. Binance lists a TUSD spot pair. Availability and purchase methods depend on the platform and the customer’s location. Eligible users can also obtain newly minted TUSD through TrueUSD’s verified-account and bank-wire process. (kraken.com)
TUSD can be held in a wallet that supports its specific blockchain version. MetaMask provides access to TUSD on supported networks, while Ledger provides a hardware-wallet option for TrueUSD. An Ethereum TUSD transfer must use the Ethereum version and a compatible address; TRON and other versions need their matching network support. Checking the network and token contract identifies which form of TUSD a wallet or service handles. (metamask.io)
Regulatory & Compliance
Financial rules and Islamic finance
TrueUSD’s direct minting and redemption process includes customer verification, and its banking partners apply know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering requirements. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission brought a 2024 case against former TUSD issuer TrueCoin and TrustToken involving investment contracts connected with TUSD and the TrueFi lending program. The SEC alleged that reserve descriptions during the period covered by its complaint did not reflect substantial investments in an offshore fund. The two companies agreed to settle the charges without admitting or denying the allegations. (tusd.io)
Rules also differ across jurisdictions. In the European Union, the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework sets authorization requirements for issuers of tokens that seek to maintain value by reference to a single currency. Those rules affect how dollar-linked tokens may be offered or admitted to trading there. (esma.europa.eu)
Shariah assessments of TUSD address both the token’s use and the financial arrangements behind it. Sharlife, a Malaysian Shariah advisory service, regards its use in permissible transactions as acceptable when currency-exchange rules, including immediate possession, are met. CoinStudy’s screening classifies TUSD as noncompliant under its framework because of interest-related concerns involving reserve arrangements and lending uses. A dollar peg alone therefore does not settle every Islamic-finance question about the token. (sharlife.my)
Future Outlook
Continued support and a proposed USDD option
TrueUSD has announced a plan to offer holders an optional one-for-one swap from TUSD to USDD through official interfaces and participating exchanges. The announcement says TUSD will continue to operate, trade, and support redemption alongside the proposed option. It describes broader multi-chain use and participation features as goals for USDD, with technical details and a rollout timetable to follow. (tusd.io)
For TUSD, continued usefulness will depend on support from wallets, exchanges, and applications, as well as clear reporting about its reserve process. The proposed swap gives the project another path for its ecosystem, while TUSD remains the token with the history, contracts, and banking process described here. (tusd.io)
Summary
TrueUSD connects dollar-denominated value with blockchain transfers. Launched by TrustToken in 2018 and later placed under Techteryx’s management, TUSD is issued and redeemed through a banking process and used across several networks. Its place in crypto rests on that combination of token utility, reserve reporting, and links to traditional finance. (tusd.io)
