Overview
A digital dollar on a blockchain
Pax Dollar (USDP) is a stablecoin issued by Paxos. Each token is designed to represent one U.S. dollar, and Paxos offers redemption at a one-to-one rate. People can hold and transfer USDP through a compatible crypto wallet, much as they would send other digital tokens. Its purpose is to make dollars useful in blockchain-based payments and applications. (paxos.com)
USDP combines two systems. A blockchain records token transfers, while Paxos manages issuance, redemption, and the assets backing the tokens. That makes it different from a cryptocurrency whose supply is set mainly by software rules: new USDP enters circulation when dollars are provided to the issuer, and redeemed tokens are removed from circulation. (paxos.com)
The token runs on Ethereum and Solana. These networks let people move digital dollars between wallets, exchanges, and supported applications without waiting for a blockchain to close for the day. Moving tokens on a network and converting them into money in a bank account are separate steps, however; bank transfers and account checks follow Paxos’s procedures. (support.paxos.com)

History & Team
From Paxos Standard to USDP
Paxos began in 2012 and launched the itBit Bitcoin exchange as its first product. Its founding team included Charles Cascarilla, Rich Teo, and Emil Woods. Cascarilla, Paxos’s CEO and co-founder, brought experience from traditional finance, while Teo helped build the company’s early presence in Asia. Paxos received a New York trust charter in 2015. (paxos.com)
On September 10, 2018, the company launched its dollar-backed token under the name Paxos Standard, with the ticker PAX. Paxos renamed it Pax Dollar and changed the ticker to USDP in August 2021. The new name made its link to the U.S. dollar easier to recognize. An important later step came in January 2024, when Paxos added Solana alongside Ethereum. (paxos.com)
Paxos has raised funding from investors in its broader financial-technology business. That company funding supports Paxos’s work across products and services; USDP itself is issued through the dollar-backed creation process described below. (paxos.com)
Technology & How It Works
Issuing, moving, and redeeming tokens
USDP’s basic process starts when a Paxos customer converts a U.S. dollar balance into tokens. Paxos issues the matching amount of USDP to the chosen supported network or account. A customer can later return tokens to Paxos for conversion back to dollars. This creation-and-redemption process links the number of tokens in use to the reserve assets held for them. (docs.paxos.com)
On Ethereum, USDP follows the ERC-20 token standard. ERC-20 gives compatible wallets and applications a common way to recognize and transfer it. On Solana, USDP is a token on that network instead. An Ethereum transfer and a Solana transfer use different network systems, so a withdrawal must use the network supported by its receiving address or platform. (support.paxos.com)
Blockchain transfers can be viewed on public network records. This helps people check that a token transfer took place, but those records do not show the full contents of Paxos’s off-chain reserves. Information about the backing comes from the issuer’s disclosures and independent attestations. Paxos’s USDP transparency archive contains such reports and states that the company no longer proactively provides monthly reserve reports for USDP. (paxos.com)
Paxos also has controls over tokens it issues. Its stablecoin terms describe the ability to freeze or upgrade tokens and to act on legal directives. This is part of how an issuer-managed digital dollar operates: the blockchain handles transfers, while Paxos remains responsible for key parts of the token’s administration. (paxos.com)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply follows demand for digital dollars
USDP has an economic model built around creation and redemption, rather than a fixed supply set at launch. When eligible customers convert dollars into USDP, tokens are issued. When they redeem USDP, tokens are removed. The amount in circulation can therefore change as people seek more or fewer blockchain-based dollars. (paxos.com)
Paxos says USDP reserves are held in cash and cash equivalents for one-to-one redemption. Its terms describe backing through bank-held dollars or eligible debt instruments. The company holds customer reserve assets separately from its own assets. These arrangements support USDP’s main function: giving holders a dollar-denominated token they can transfer or redeem. (paxos.com)
The token’s utility comes from using it, not from voting rights or a planned rise in its value. Holding USDP does not require staking it to run Ethereum or Solana. People use it as a unit for payments, transfers, and transactions in supported applications. Network transaction charges may still apply when it moves between wallets. (support.paxos.com)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Payments, exchange, and applications
A person or business can use USDP to send a dollar-denominated payment to someone with a compatible wallet. This can be useful when the sender and receiver use different services or live in different countries. The token can travel on a blockchain at any hour; the time needed for a recipient to convert it into a local bank balance depends on the services involved. (support.paxos.com)
USDP also serves as a dollar unit on crypto exchanges. A user can move into a stablecoin between other digital-asset transactions without first sending funds through a bank. Ethereum-based applications can use ERC-20 USDP in supported swaps and other smart-contract activities, while Solana gives developers another network for token transfers. (support.paxos.com)
For businesses, Paxos documents payment workflows that support USDP on both Ethereum and Solana. Its platform also provides tools to mint, redeem, and move stablecoins. These features make USDP relevant to companies building payment or settlement services, as well as to individuals transferring funds. (docs.paxos.com)
Advantages & Challenges
What the design offers—and what it requires
USDP’s clearest advantage is its simple dollar purpose. One-to-one backing and redemption give users a familiar unit for measuring payments. Support for two blockchains offers a choice between networks, while Paxos’s published terms explain who manages issuance and the reserve assets. (paxos.com)
That structure also brings trade-offs. USDP depends on Paxos to manage the backing, process redemption, and administer the token. Its value is intended to stay close to a dollar, so it serves a different purpose from tokens bought for potential price growth. Ethereum and Solana have different transaction charges and wallet requirements, and the availability of exchange or payment services varies by location. (support.paxos.com)
Where to Buy & Wallets
Platforms and compatible storage
Pax Dollar can be purchased on Kraken and Coinbase where those platforms make it available. Eligible Paxos customers can also create USDP by converting a dollar balance through Paxos. Access depends on the platform and the customer’s location. (kraken.com)
USDP can be held in a wallet that supports its chosen network. Ledger provides support for Pax Dollar, and Ethereum-compatible wallets can hold the ERC-20 token. Solana transfers require a wallet or platform that supports USDP on Solana. The network selected for a withdrawal must match the network used by the receiving service. (ledger.com)
Regulatory & Compliance
Issuer oversight and regional rules
USDP is issued by Paxos Trust Company, National Association. Paxos operated under a New York trust charter before converting to a national trust charter on December 12, 2025. Its U.S. trust company is now supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Paxos’s stablecoin terms set out its redemption process, while its controls include identity checks and action on applicable legal requirements. (paxos.com)
Rules and platform access differ across jurisdictions. In the European Union, Paxos’s European issuer offers its separate Global Dollar token under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. Coinbase has restricted services for PAX/USDP for certain European customers under its MiCA policy. Paxos’s European authorization for Global Dollar and its U.S. oversight of USDP are distinct arrangements. (paxos.com)
USDP’s halal status depends on a Shariah assessment of the token and its use. Islamic finance guidance examines matters such as how a digital asset is exchanged, the rights it provides, and whether a transaction involves interest. Using USDP for a direct payment raises different questions from placing it in an interest-paying lending arrangement. A U.S. regulatory charter or dollar backing does not, by itself, settle that religious assessment. (sc.com.my)
Future Outlook
The role of a usable digital dollar
USDP’s path depends on whether wallets, exchanges, payment providers, and businesses continue to find a place for it. Ethereum gives the token access to a broad smart-contract environment; Solana adds another route for transfers and payments. Paxos’s payment and conversion tools provide ways for businesses to build those uses into their services. (support.paxos.com)
Its lasting value in the ecosystem rests on a straightforward idea: a token that can move through blockchain networks while remaining tied to redeemable U.S. dollars. As digital payment services develop, clear redemption terms, issuer oversight, and practical network support will continue to shape where USDP fits. (paxos.com)
Summary
Pax Dollar brings a dollar-backed token to Ethereum and Solana. Paxos manages its issuance, reserves, and redemption, while blockchain networks let holders transfer it between compatible wallets and services. USDP’s main role is practical: making a familiar dollar unit available for digital payments, settlement, and other supported crypto applications. (support.paxos.com)
