Waves (WAVES) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The unlock chart above provides a clear visual overview of the Waves (WAVES) token release schedule, showing when and how tokens enter circulation across investor, team, treasury, and community allocations. Understanding these tokenomics dynamics is critical for evaluating potential supply pressure, inflation impact, and market liquidity over time — key factors that can influence WAVES price performance.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply and monetary policy
- Initial supply: 100 million WAVES were created at genesis in April 2016. (docs.waves.tech)
- Block rewards: In October 2019, Waves activated a community‑driven block reward. The starting reward was 6 WAVES per key block, with the amount adjustable by validator voting in steps of 0.5 WAVES over set periods. This turned WAVES into a mildly inflationary asset whose issuance is guided by on‑chain governance. (docs.waves.tech)
- Distribution of rewards: Over 2023–2024, the network added features to share portions of block rewards with the Waves DAO treasury and to modify that split over time, including caps and later the cessation of an XTN buy‑back share. Documentation also describes a temporary “Boost Block Reward” feature that, if activated by vote, multiplies block rewards for a limited number of blocks. (docs.waves.tech)
Validator income and leasing
A block generator’s income combines:
- its share of the block reward (the exact split depends on current feature status),
- a portion of transaction fees in the current and previous blocks (per Waves‑NG),
- and claimable LP tokens from the Waves DAO share when applicable. Holders who lease their WAVES to validators typically receive a negotiated share of that income. (docs.waves.tech)
Network utility
WAVES serves to:
- pay transaction fees (or sponsor fees in an issued token),
- secure the network via LPoS and leasing,
- participate indirectly in protocol decisions (e.g., reward size) through the behavior of generating nodes, and
- act as base collateral or accounting unit within various ecosystem protocols, swaps, and bridges. (docs.waves.tech)
Assumptions
- Supply is uncapped after activation of Feature #14; total_supply set to null.
Block rewards continuously mint new WAVES per block with governance-adjustable size; no maximum cap specified.
- Genesis allocations (ICO, early supporters, bounties, strategic partners, team) are modeled as unlocked at mainnet launch.
Official ICO post lists the breakdown; mainnet launch post states Genesis block created and investors could withdraw. No primary-source vesting details were found for these buckets.
- PoS rewards modeled at 6 WAVES per block from 2019-10-07 through 2025-11-26.
Docs and staking references list current reward as 6 WAVES per block; no authoritative record found of any successful network-wide change to another value during this interval.
- Issued PoS tokens through 2025-11-26 are estimated from block heights.
Used documented activation height (1,740,000), a public explorer snapshot height on 2025-10-10, and ~1 block/min average to interpolate to 2025-11-26. Minor variance from actual chain height possible.
- Transaction-fee redistribution is excluded.
Fees redistribute existing WAVES and do not mint new tokens; only actual issuance mechanisms are included.
