Overview
Spell (SPELL) is the governance and incentive token of Abracadabra.money, a decentralized finance platform for borrowing against crypto assets. Abracadabra’s borrowing system produces Magic Internet Money (MIM), a stablecoin designed to track the U.S. dollar. SPELL has a different job: it rewards participation in the platform and gives people who stake it a way to take part in governance and receive a share of protocol revenue. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Abracadabra began with a useful idea. Some people hold tokens that represent deposits in other DeFi products. Those tokens may earn yield, but their value is otherwise tied up. Abracadabra lets users place eligible tokens in a lending market as collateral and borrow MIM against them. Its markets can also accept other supported crypto assets. This links SPELL to a larger system of borrowing, lending fees, stablecoin use, and community decisions. (docs.abracadabra.money)

History & Team
From yield-bearing assets to a lending platform
Abracadabra emerged in 2021, when DeFi users were looking for more ways to use assets already deposited in yield-generating products. Daniele Sestagalli and the pseudonymous contributor Squirrel were associated with the project’s early development. Another early contributor, known as 0xMerlin, is identified in Abracadabra’s documentation as a lead developer. The project grew from its original lending idea into a platform with several kinds of collateral and products across multiple blockchain networks. (thedefiant.io)
The team chose a set of names that makes each asset’s role easier to remember: MIM is the dollar-denominated borrowing token, while SPELL supports incentives and governance. Abracadabra also introduced ways to stake SPELL. These features gave token holders a role beyond holding or trading the asset. The protocol describes its decision-making structure as the Abracadabra DAO, with proposals discussed by the community and put to a vote. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Technology & How It Works
Cauldrons and MIM borrowing
Abracadabra calls its lending markets Cauldrons. A user deposits an accepted asset into a Cauldron and chooses how much MIM to borrow against it. The deposited asset is collateral: it helps cover the debt until the user repays what they owe. Each market has its own settings, including a borrowing limit, an opening fee, and an interest rate. The rate increases the amount owed over time. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Cauldrons are isolated markets based on Kashi lending technology. This means a position is tracked separately from a user’s positions in other Cauldrons. A simple example shows the borrowing limit. If a market allows borrowing up to 50% of collateral value, a deposit valued at $200 could support up to $100 of MIM debt under that limit. The permitted percentage differs by market. If the value of collateral falls far enough compared with the debt, the position can become eligible for liquidation. A liquidator can then repay the debt in return for collateral. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Abracadabra also offers a leverage feature in certain Cauldrons. Rather than sending borrowed MIM to the user’s wallet, the feature exchanges it for more of the chosen collateral and deposits that collateral into the position. Borrowing MIM for use elsewhere and borrowing it to add collateral are therefore two different ways to use the same lending system. SPELL supports participation around that system, but MIM is the token received when a user takes out a loan. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply and distribution
Abracadabra’s documentation sets out a SPELL supply of 210 billion tokens following an initial burn that reduced the original 420 billion figure by half. Its stated distribution assigns 63% to farming and liquidity incentives, 30% to the team under a four-year vesting schedule, and 7% to an initial decentralized-exchange offering. Those categories explain why the token was created: a large share was reserved to encourage activity in markets connected to the protocol. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Staking, fees, and voting
SPELL holders can stake their tokens through two mechanisms described by Abracadabra. In the sSPELL pool, a user deposits SPELL and receives sSPELL, which represents a share of the staking pool. Protocol revenue directed to that pool is converted into SPELL, increasing the amount represented by each share over time. The mSPELL mechanism instead distributes revenue in MIM for stakers to claim. Unlike sSPELL, mSPELL is a staking position rather than a separate token received in the wallet. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Staking also connects token holders to governance. Abracadabra describes community voting on proposals through Snapshot, with voting power tied to eligible staked-token holdings and other recognized positions. A successful vote can guide changes to incentives or other protocol decisions, which the team then implements. SPELL’s main uses are therefore closely linked: encouraging liquidity, sharing revenue with stakers, and giving participants a voice in the platform’s direction. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Abracadabra brings together several activities that users can choose separately. A borrower may deposit a supported asset and receive MIM to use elsewhere. Someone who already holds SPELL may stake it to participate in governance and the protocol’s revenue-sharing system. A liquidity provider may join an eligible pool and, where an incentive program applies, receive SPELL rewards. These activities connect the lending markets, MIM, and SPELL without making every user take part in all three. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Yield-bearing collateral remains a distinctive use case. Imagine a token that represents a deposit in another DeFi service. If Abracadabra accepts that token in a Cauldron, its holder can use it as collateral while retaining the underlying position represented by the token. The platform has also documented markets and tools for other forms of collateral, including integrations with GMX V2 positions. The assets accepted, the borrowing terms, and the MIM available are set market by market. (docs.abracadabra.money)
The ecosystem spans more than one blockchain network. Abracadabra documents SPELL deployments or bridged versions on Ethereum and several other networks, while its staking tools describe options on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, and Fantom. Network support matters because tokens on different chains have different contract addresses, and a position opened on one chain exists in that chain’s contracts. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Advantages & Challenges
Spell’s clearest strength is its defined place within a working DeFi platform. Its governance and staking functions are connected to Cauldrons that charge borrowing fees and interest. The choice between sSPELL and mSPELL gives stakers two ways to receive their allocated share of revenue: more SPELL through the sSPELL pool or claimable MIM through mSPELL. Isolated Cauldrons also let the protocol set borrowing rules for each market rather than applying one set of terms to every asset. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Those same connections make the system more complex to learn. A reader has to distinguish SPELL from MIM, understand what staking does, and recognize that a Cauldron’s settings apply to a particular collateral asset. Liquidations are part of keeping MIM loans backed by collateral, while revenue received by stakers depends on activity and the protocol’s allocation rules. Governance adds another step: proposals and voting can change how the system operates over time. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Where to Buy & Wallets
SPELL can be purchased on Coinbase and, in supported regions, Binance. It was also distributed through an initial offering on Uniswap and SushiSwap. The available purchase methods depend on the platform and the user’s location. (coinbase.com)
SPELL can be held in a wallet that supports its network, such as MetaMask for the Ethereum version. Abracadabra lists the Ethereum SPELL contract address as 0x090185f2135308BaD17527004364eBcC2D37e5F6. MetaMask allows users to display a token by adding its contract address. For versions on other networks, the relevant network and contract address are different. Holding SPELL in a compatible wallet also lets a user connect to supported DeFi applications, including Abracadabra’s staking interface. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Regulatory & Compliance
Rules for digital assets depend on the jurisdiction and on the activity involved. In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service treats digital assets as property for federal tax purposes. Selling or exchanging SPELL can create a reportable gain or loss, and rewards received through staking may also have tax consequences. In the European Union, the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation sets rules for certain crypto-asset issuers and service providers. SPELL’s governance role and MIM’s stablecoin role are different features when considering how those rules apply. (irs.gov)
Shariah compliance involves a separate set of principles. Islamic finance standards prohibit riba, or interest on loans. Abracadabra’s Cauldrons charge interest on MIM debt, and protocol revenue can be shared with people who stake SPELL. Those features create a substantial Shariah concern for SPELL’s fee-sharing use. A halal determination for the token would require a dedicated review of its uses and the revenue received by holders; its governance function alone does not settle that assessment. (ifsb.org)
Future Outlook
Spell’s long-term role is tied to how Abracadabra develops its lending markets, MIM borrowing, governance, and incentives. Adding a new kind of collateral or changing a Cauldron’s terms can affect how people use the platform. Community decisions can also change where incentive tokens go and how protocol revenue is allocated. These are practical areas of development because they build on functions already documented by Abracadabra. (docs.abracadabra.money)
The project’s broader use across networks and its work with products such as GMX V2 show how its Cauldron model can be adapted to different assets. SPELL remains the token through which users can stake and take part in decisions around that model. Its place in DeFi will depend on whether those tools continue to serve borrowers, liquidity providers, and governance participants. (docs.abracadabra.money)
Summary
Spell is the incentive and governance token at the center of Abracadabra.money. The platform uses isolated Cauldrons to let users borrow MIM against supported collateral, while SPELL connects token holders to staking and community decisions. Understanding the difference between SPELL, staked SPELL, and MIM makes the project’s design much easier to follow: each serves a separate purpose in the same DeFi ecosystem. (docs.abracadabra.money)
