Overview
Pirate Nation (PIRATE) grew out of a pirate-themed role-playing game built around quests, battles, crafting, and player-owned items. PIRATE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. In the original game, it connected a transferable cryptocurrency to an economy of pirates, ships, resources, and in-game currencies. Players could use it for purchases and earn it through certain activities. (docs.piratenation.game)
The project has changed since that game launched. Pirate Nation Classic has closed, and its developer, Proof of Play, released the game’s code as an archive rather than continuing to operate it as a live service. The independent Pirate Nation Foundation continues to support PIRATE. That history matters: the token remains on Ethereum, while many of the uses described in the game’s earlier materials belong to the Classic era. (classic.piratenation.game)

History & Team
From a game studio to a foundation
Proof of Play launched Pirate Nation in late 2022. The studio was led by Amitt Mahajan, a co-creator of FarmVille who had also worked on other gaming and technology projects. Its team included people with experience at companies such as Epic Games, Zynga, EA, Activision, and Riot Games. Investors in Proof of Play included a16z and Greenoaks. This backing supported the studio that built the game; it was separate from the game’s rewards for PIRATE holders. (piratenation.foundation)
The game began with a collection of 9,999 Founder’s Pirates NFTs minted in November 2022. At first, a player needed one of these characters to enter. Proof of Play later introduced free-to-play pirates, opening the game to people who did not own a Founder’s Pirate. PIRATE launched in June 2024, giving the growing game a token for player rewards and purchases. (piratenation.foundation)
Pirate Nation Classic later closed. In August 2026, Proof of Play announced that it would cease operations. Its public release of the Unity game client and contracts preserves material that other developers can study or build on. The Pirate Nation Foundation is independent of the studio and continues to support the token. (github.com)
Technology & How It Works
On-chain gameplay
Pirate Nation Classic used smart contracts for game logic and assets. A smart contract is a program on a blockchain that follows set rules when someone interacts with it. Players’ actions could therefore update records on-chain rather than only in a private game database. The game used Ethereum for Founder’s Pirates and Proof of Play’s Apex chain for gameplay; Boss was later added to spread activity across a second game chain. (docs.piratenation.game)
Different assets followed different token standards. Pirates and ships used ERC-721, a standard for unique items. Resources used ERC-1155, which can represent many kinds of game items within one system. PIRATE used ERC-20, the standard for interchangeable tokens. These choices let the game give a distinct identity to a ship while treating each unit of PIRATE like any other unit. (docs.piratenation.game)
The design also showed how complicated an on-chain game can become. Every quest, item, and battle rule needs a way to fit into the game’s technology. Apex and Boss were built to handle the high number of actions generated by play. The archived client shows how the game connected its visual interface and backend systems to blockchain contracts, but the released code has no live Classic-game backend attached to it. (docs.piratenation.game)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply and original allocation
The Pirate Nation Foundation set PIRATE’s supply at one billion tokens. Its launch plan assigned 47% to the community, 13.25% to the ecosystem, 28% to the team, and 11.75% to investors and advisers. The community share was intended to reward participation, while the ecosystem share supported activities such as creator rewards and growth. Team and investor allocations followed a planned schedule with an initial waiting period and later monthly releases. These figures describe the original allocation, rather than how tokens are held today. (piratenation.foundation)
In Classic, PIRATE served several roles. Players could exchange it for Gems, a non-transferable in-game currency used for energy, shorter wait times, and some game activities. The shop also accepted PIRATE for selected items. Players earned token rewards through features including game achievements and seasonal activities. These uses were tied to the original game and shop. (docs.piratenation.game)
PIRATE could also be staked for Proof of Play Points under the original program. Those points recognized participation in the studio’s wider ecosystem. Following Proof of Play’s closure, they are no longer redeemable. The distinction between an Ethereum token and a studio-run points program is central to understanding how the project evolved. (docs.piratenation.game)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Characters, currencies, and creation
Pirate Nation Classic linked several kinds of assets to play. Pirates went on quests, gained experience, and improved their abilities. Players gathered materials, crafted items, built ships, and used battle cards. Founder’s Pirates were collectible characters, while free-to-play pirates offered another way into the game. Items and ships formed part of an economy in which players could make and exchange game assets. (piratenation.foundation)
That economy had currencies with different jobs. Pirate Gold, or PGLD, was used for activities such as crafting and leveling. New players with locked trading earned Marks instead; those Marks could later convert to PGLD when trading was unlocked. Gems were used for optional game actions, and PIRATE connected some of those purchases to an Ethereum token. Separating these roles helped the game manage ordinary progress and token-based spending. (docs.piratenation.game)
A simpler Pirate Nation Arcade experience also appeared on Abstract. It used short competitive runs and credits rather than recreating every Classic system. The Arcade site describes a seasonal pause. Together with the archived Classic code, it shows how parts of Pirate Nation’s design have lived beyond the original service, though it does not establish an active replacement for every former PIRATE use. (arcade.piratenation.game)
Advantages & Challenges
Pirate Nation’s lasting contribution is its detailed example of an on-chain game. Characters, items, and rules were designed around blockchain records that players and builders could inspect. Its free-to-play characters widened access beyond the original NFT collection. The later release of the game’s code and artwork gives developers material to learn from and adapt. (docs.piratenation.game)
Its main challenge is continuity. The Classic game gave PIRATE a clear setting: players earned it, spent it on Gems, and used it in the shop. With Classic closed and Proof of Play no longer operating, those historical uses cannot be described as an ongoing game economy. Maintaining a token and operating a full game are different tasks. The foundation’s support keeps PIRATE connected to a project, while future applications depend on what builders and the foundation create. (classic.piratenation.game)
The project also illustrates a practical limit of its original approach. Putting a large number of game actions on-chain called for dedicated infrastructure, including Apex and Boss. The approach made gameplay records unusually open, but it also made the game more complex to run than a typical browser-based role-playing game. (docs.piratenation.game)
Where to Buy & Wallets
PIRATE is available on Gate through its PIRATE/USDT spot market and on Uniswap through an Ethereum token swap. Availability on an exchange can vary by location. PIRATE is an Ethereum ERC-20 token, so an Ethereum-compatible wallet such as MetaMask can hold it. (gate.com)
The token’s Ethereum contract address is 0x7613C48E0cd50E42dD9Bf0f6c235063145f6f8DC. MetaMask allows ERC-20 tokens to be displayed by importing their contract address. This address identifies PIRATE as a token on Ethereum; the former Apex and Boss gameplay chains served different purposes in the Classic game. (docs.piratenation.game)
Regulatory & Compliance
PIRATE’s use as a game token does not, by itself, settle its legal treatment everywhere. In the United States, the treatment of a crypto-asset transaction depends on its facts, including how an asset was offered and what buyers were told to expect. U.S. tax rules also treat digital assets as property and can apply when tokens are received, sold, or exchanged. In the European Union, MiCA sets rules for covered crypto-asset offerings and admission to trading, with requirements that depend on the circumstances. (sec.gov)
PIRATE has no stated project-specific shariah certification in the foundation’s token materials. Its original design centered on game purchases and rewards rather than an interest-paying lending product. A shariah assessment would also consider how a person uses the token, including the terms of any paid competition or reward. Islamic finance standards address matters such as excessive uncertainty, so the token’s game label alone does not establish a universal halal ruling. (piratenation.foundation)
Future Outlook
PIRATE’s future is linked to the independent foundation and to any new work built around the token or the project’s released material. Proof of Play’s public repositories include game code, contracts, and artwork. Those resources make experimentation possible, but an archived game client is different from an operated game with accounts, events, and regular updates. (github.com)
The project’s next stage will be defined by concrete uses rather than by the Classic game’s old roadmap. Pirate Nation leaves behind a substantial example of player-owned characters and on-chain game systems. Whether PIRATE gains a larger role in future experiences depends on new applications that connect the Ethereum token to things people can do. (docs.piratenation.game)
Summary
Pirate Nation began as a fully on-chain pirate adventure with an Ethereum token for rewards and game purchases. Classic has closed, Proof of Play has ceased operations, and the independent Pirate Nation Foundation continues to support PIRATE. The token remains part of crypto gaming’s history and of an open collection of game technology that builders can explore. (docs.piratenation.game)
