Overview
OriginTrail is a network for organizing and sharing information so people and software can trace where it came from. Its main technology is the Decentralized Knowledge Graph, or DKG. A knowledge graph connects related facts: a product to its maker, a shipment to its records, or a research finding to the work behind it. OriginTrail adds ways to publish those connections across a network and check their history. Its token, TRAC, helps pay for that network to operate. (docs.origintrail.io)
The project began with supply-chain data. It now also focuses on information used by artificial intelligence (AI). An AI tool can draw on a graph of linked records rather than treating each document as an isolated piece of text. OriginTrail calls the published records in its graph Knowledge Assets. Together, they are meant to make information easier to find, connect, and verify. (docs.origintrail.io)

History & Team
From supply chains to shared knowledge
Tomaž Levak, Žiga Drev, and Branimir Rakić founded the project in 2013 to improve transparency and trust in supply chains. Its early work addressed a common problem: manufacturers, transport firms, and other partners kept useful records in separate systems. OriginTrail later developed an open, decentralized protocol that could connect those records. Its DKG mainnet launched in 2018. (origintrail.io)
Trace Labs is a core developer of OriginTrail. The project’s scope has grown from tracking physical goods to connecting information in fields such as healthcare, construction, research, and AI. That shift builds on the same basic idea: a record becomes more useful when its source and links to other records can be checked. (origintrail.io)
Technology & How It Works
The Decentralized Knowledge Graph
A regular database can store a product’s name, maker, and shipping date. A knowledge graph also describes how that product relates to a factory, a delivery, an inspection, or a certificate. These links let an application follow a chain of information instead of searching many separate files. OriginTrail’s DKG is a peer-to-peer network of nodes that supports this kind of structured, searchable data. (docs.origintrail.io)
Knowledge Assets are the records published into this system. For example, a rail-part record might connect the part’s identity with its maker, test results, and maintenance history. Nodes help make published assets available and discoverable. A blockchain record can provide a way to check when selected knowledge was published and whether its record has changed. (docs.origintrail.io)
Private, shared, and verifiable memory
OriginTrail also describes the DKG as a memory system for AI agents—software that can carry out tasks using information it finds. Its current design separates memory into three layers. Working memory lets an agent keep drafts private. Shared memory lets selected peers work with information together. Verifiable memory holds published Knowledge Assets with an on-chain anchor and a checkable history. This gives teams a path from early notes to records that others can inspect. (docs.origintrail.io)
The DKG uses established data standards to help different systems understand one another. In supply chains, these include GS1 standards for identifying products and describing events in a product’s journey. OriginTrail also uses a multichain approach, so its knowledge tools can work with more than one blockchain ecosystem. The graph, the nodes that serve it, and the blockchains used for verification each play a different part. (origintrail.io)
Tokenomics & Utility
TRAC’s role in the network
TRAC launched in 2018 as an Ethereum ERC-20 token. It has a fixed supply of 500 million tokens. OriginTrail describes TRAC as the utility token for DKG operations: publishers use it to compensate node operators for making Knowledge Assets available, while node operators receive it for providing that service. Publishing costs depend in part on the amount of data and how long it is made available. (origintrail.io)
Node operators can lock TRAC as collateral. This increases their stake in the network and can improve their chance of receiving work and its related fees. Token holders can also delegate TRAC to nodes that accept outside stake, sharing in a portion of the fees those nodes earn. These are service-based roles within the DKG’s incentive system. (origintrail.io)
OriginTrail supports TRAC on several networks, including Ethereum, Base, Gnosis, Polygon, and NeuroWeb. The ecosystem has also described a separate token for its NeuroWeb blockchain. TRAC’s central role is tied to publishing and supporting knowledge on the DKG. (origintrail.io)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Tracking goods and records
Supply chains remain a clear example of what the DKG can do. A company can connect records about products, locations, shipments, and inspections. Other participants can then follow the relevant links to understand a product’s path. The network’s use of GS1 standards helps those records fit with systems businesses already use. (origintrail.io)
OriginTrail-based work includes AidTrust, developed with the British Standards Institution to improve visibility into donated medicine as it moves through a supply chain. The project also describes uses in rail transportation, where connected records can help track individual parts and their quality information. These examples show why a graph is useful: the answer to a practical question may depend on records held by several organizations. (origintrail.io)
Information for AI
The same structure can help AI applications find material with an identifiable source. OriginTrail’s approach to decentralized retrieval-augmented generation, or dRAG, connects AI responses to knowledge retrieved from the DKG. An agent can search related assets, use the information it finds, and leave a trail that helps others examine the records behind an answer. (docs.origintrail.io)
OriginTrail’s roadmap reports that more than one billion Knowledge Assets were created during its earlier Genesis phase. Its newer work emphasizes shared context for AI agents: one agent can create information, others can refine it, and selected results can become verifiable records. (origintrail.io)
Advantages & Challenges
What the design offers
OriginTrail’s main advantage is its combination of connected data and checkable history. A link between records gives information context; a publication trail helps show where it came from. Open standards can make it easier for organizations with different software to exchange useful records. Separating private drafts from shared and published knowledge also gives teams a way to choose what they make available. (docs.origintrail.io)
The harder task is turning scattered real-world data into records that work well together. Organizations must describe information in compatible ways and decide which details to share. A verifiable publication history shows the path of a record, while the quality of its contents still depends on the people and systems that produced it. OriginTrail’s usefulness therefore grows from both its technical network and the care participants take when creating Knowledge Assets. (origintrail.io)
Where to Buy & Wallets
TRAC is available on Coinbase and Kraken. Trading access depends on the exchange and the customer’s location. Buyers using either platform can select OriginTrail by its TRAC ticker. (coinbase.com)
The Ethereum ERC-20 version of TRAC can be held in an EVM-compatible wallet such as MetaMask, or in a supported hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor. OriginTrail lists separate TRAC contract addresses for the networks it supports. The wallet and network selected for a transfer need to match the version of TRAC being sent. (origintrail.io)
Regulatory & Compliance
TRAC has a defined network function: it pays for DKG publishing and supports nodes that provide the service. In the European Union, the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation sets rules for crypto-asset offerings and service providers. In the United States, the SEC’s 2026 guidance explains that a crypto asset’s features and the circumstances of a transaction matter when applying federal securities law. These frameworks address crypto activity in different ways; they do not replace the rules governing the business records an organization publishes. (origintrail.io)
For organizations using OriginTrail, compliance can also involve how product, health, or personal information is handled. The DKG’s private and shared memory layers allow information to be kept within a group before selected records are published for wider verification. (docs.origintrail.io)
Halal or Shariah compliance is a separate assessment of TRAC’s use and economic arrangements. Relevant questions include what services publishing fees pay for, how node and delegation rewards are earned, and how a holder uses the token. A qualified Islamic finance assessment would consider those details under its applicable Shariah principles; TRAC has no single halal classification that applies to every use or jurisdiction. (origintrail.io)
Future Outlook
OriginTrail’s development direction centers on making linked knowledge more useful to AI agents. Its DKG v10 materials describe agents keeping private notes, sharing context with peers, and publishing selected information with a verifiable history. The roadmap also describes work on agent interoperability, better ways to find related knowledge, and systems for handling a larger graph. (origintrail.io)
The long-term value of this work will depend on whether builders and organizations keep producing useful, well-described records that others can connect and check. Supply-chain applications provide one foundation; shared AI memory extends the same idea to software working across teams and systems. (origintrail.io)
Summary
OriginTrail uses a Decentralized Knowledge Graph to connect records, preserve their history, and make selected information verifiable. TRAC supports that system by paying for publication and rewarding the nodes that serve the graph. Starting with supply chains and expanding toward AI, the project gives crypto a practical role in how knowledge is shared across different systems. (origintrail.io)
