Overview
Midnight is a blockchain built for applications that need both shared records and control over sensitive information. Its native token, NIGHT, supports participation in the network. Midnight also uses DUST, a resource generated from registered NIGHT holdings to pay for transactions and smart contract activity. Keeping these two roles separate is a central part of the project’s design. (midnight.network)
On many blockchains, anyone can inspect transaction details. That openness helps people verify records, but it can make personal or business activity too visible. Midnight lets developers build applications that keep selected data private while placing the information needed for verification on a shared ledger. Its approach is often called programmable privacy: the application’s rules determine what is revealed and what remains private. (midnight.network)

History & Team
Midnight grew out of work connected to Input Output, the company associated with Cardano’s development. Charles Hoskinson, Input Output’s founder, has been a prominent voice in explaining Midnight’s place in a broader, connected blockchain ecosystem. In May 2025, the Midnight Foundation and Shielded Technologies were introduced as two organizations with different roles. The foundation guides ecosystem growth and the network’s long-term direction; Shielded Technologies develops the core protocol and developer tools. (midnight.network)
NIGHT launched on Cardano in December 2025, before the Midnight blockchain went live. This gave the token a way to reach holders while the production network was being prepared. Midnight’s first permanent mainnet block was created on March 17, 2026. The network began with a controlled application rollout. On September 28, 2026, it opened smart contract deployment to developers without the earlier required security review on its Preprod network. (midnight.network)
Technology & How It Works
Public records and private data
Midnight is a layer-1 blockchain designed as a Cardano partner chain. Its applications can combine public and private information. For example, an app could check that a person meets an age requirement without publishing that person’s birth date. A business could prove that a payment meets agreed rules while keeping selected transaction details out of public view. (midnight.network)
The key tool is a zero-knowledge proof. A proof lets the network check that a statement is true without receiving all the data behind it. Midnight applications can keep private information in a user’s local state, then submit a proof that the app’s rules have been followed. The blockchain records the result needed for shared agreement. What stays private and what becomes public depends on how the application is built. (midnight.network)
Developers write privacy-aware smart contracts in Compact, a language with syntax inspired by TypeScript. They can use Midnight.js to connect applications to wallets, manage private state, generate proofs, and submit transactions. These tools are meant to make zero-knowledge features more practical for developers who are not cryptography specialists. (midnight.network)
Midnight’s early mainnet uses a federated set of approved block-producing nodes. Its consensus design uses AURA to assign block-production turns and GRANDPA to finalize blocks. The project’s roadmap calls for node operation and governance to become more open over time. Permissionless smart contract deployment is already available, but it is a separate milestone from permissionless block production. (midnight.network)
Tokenomics & Utility
NIGHT and DUST
NIGHT has a stated total supply of 24 billion tokens. It is an unshielded asset: NIGHT transfers are recorded on a public ledger. A holder can register NIGHT to generate DUST, the shielded resource consumed when using Midnight. Registration is an active step. Cardano-based holders can use the DUST Generator application to link their NIGHT holdings to a Midnight address without moving the underlying tokens. (midnight.network)
DUST cannot be traded or sent between wallets like an ordinary token. It builds up over time in relation to registered NIGHT, is used for network fees, and can decline when the NIGHT supporting its generation is reduced. This means an application operator can hold NIGHT and arrange to cover users’ transaction costs, letting people use an app without each person first acquiring NIGHT. The NIGHT itself is not spent on those transactions. (midnight.network)
The token’s planned roles also include future governance and incentives for block producers. During the initial federated phase, node operators do not receive NIGHT block rewards. Broader token-holder governance is part of the network’s longer-term direction rather than the way its first production phase was run. (midnight.network)
Midnight distributed tokens through a multistage program. The Glacier Drop included eligible holders from eight blockchain communities, while Scavenger Mine offered another route to participate. According to the project’s launch figures, individual Glacier Drop claims covered more than 3.5 billion NIGHT across over 170,000 eligible addresses; Scavenger Mine claims covered 1 billion NIGHT. Eligible allocations unlock in four equal installments, so claiming and receiving a full allocation are separate steps. (midnight.network)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Midnight’s privacy tools can serve identity checks, payments, digital assets, games, and business records. An identity application could confirm that someone meets a rule without sharing a full identity document. An invoicing app could verify settlement while limiting who can view payer details or amounts. These uses rely on developers setting clear rules for both proof and disclosure. (midnight.network)
The ecosystem includes established infrastructure providers and teams building applications. Its announced federated-node partners include Google Cloud, Blockdaemon, MoneyGram, Worldpay, and others. On the application side, a developer sprint with VIA Labs produced working examples of cross-chain USDM transfers and private-payment tools. Midnight has also reported work on wallet support, fee sponsorship, and Compact contract libraries. These efforts span production features, test environments, and early application projects at different stages of development. (midnight.network)
Advantages & Challenges
Midnight’s main advantage is choice over data visibility. An application can use a shared blockchain record without making every piece of information public. The NIGHT-and-DUST model also gives developers a way to cover users’ network fees while keeping the underlying token in their holdings. Together, these features suit apps where verification matters but broad disclosure does not. (midnight.network)
The design adds work for builders. They must decide which data belongs in private state, which results must appear on-chain, and how users will create proofs. Wallets and applications must handle both NIGHT and DUST. Midnight’s first phase also relies on approved block producers, so expanding node participation is an important part of its planned development. (midnight.network)
Where to Buy & Wallets
NIGHT is available on Kraken and OKX. Platform access and supported services depend on a user’s region. NIGHT was first issued as a Cardano native asset, so the network selected for a withdrawal matters when moving tokens into personal custody. (kraken.com)
Lace supports Midnight mainnet and other Midnight environments. Gero Wallet also supports Midnight applications, including shielded balances and DUST fee sponsorship. A holder keeping NIGHT on Cardano can register it through the DUST Generator application to generate DUST for a Midnight address. These are different actions: storing NIGHT, registering it for DUST, and using a Midnight application each serve a separate purpose. (midnight.network)
Regulatory & Compliance
Midnight’s selective-disclosure design can help an application verify a required fact while limiting how much personal information it shares. A service could, for example, set rules for an identity or eligibility check and accept a proof of the result. The service’s operator still determines what information it needs and how its activity fits the laws where it operates. (midnight.network)
In the European Union, the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation sets rules for crypto-asset offerings and service providers. In the United States, the treatment of a crypto asset depends on its features and the transactions involving it; businesses that exchange or transmit convertible virtual currency can also have obligations under FinCEN rules. Those frameworks apply to the relevant organizations and activities, rather than giving every application built on Midnight the same legal standing. (esma.europa.eu)
NIGHT’s published token materials establish its network functions, but they do not establish a formal halal or Shariah-compliant certification. Its status under Islamic finance would require an assessment of the token, its distribution, and the particular activity in which it is used. Privacy technology alone does not settle that assessment. (midnight.network)
Future Outlook
Midnight’s next steps center on wider use of its mainnet, stronger links with other chains, and a gradual move beyond federated block production. Permissionless contract deployment has made it easier for developers to put applications on the live network. Wallet tools and sponsored DUST fees address another task: making those applications simpler for people to use. (midnight.network)
The longer-term test is whether builders can turn programmable privacy into useful services. Progress will depend on applications that explain clearly what they verify, what they keep private, and why their users need both.
Summary
Midnight combines zero-knowledge smart contracts with a two-part economic model. NIGHT supports network participation and generates DUST, while DUST powers activity on the chain. With mainnet live and contract deployment open to developers, Midnight offers a way to build blockchain applications that share verifiable results without publishing every detail behind them.
