Swarm Markets is a platform for bringing financial assets onto blockchains and making them easier to exchange. Its token, SMT, supports the platform’s rewards and governance systems. Swarm’s broader aim is to let people use blockchain tools to handle both crypto assets and tokens linked to traditional assets, such as stocks or gold. A token linked to a real-world asset is often called a tokenized asset: it is a digital record whose rights depend on the rules set by its issuer. (docs.swarm.com)
The project combines two ideas that are often kept apart. Blockchain transactions can be recorded and settled through smart contracts, while financial products may need identity checks and rules about who can hold or trade them. Swarm has built tools for both open peer-to-peer exchange and trading that limits participation to qualified wallets. SMT connects users to parts of that system through rewards and votes on token-related policies. (docs.swarm.com)
As of 10/8/2026 16:00 UTC, Swarm (SMT) trades at $0.007 with a +16.67% move over the last 24 hours.
The market capitalization stands at $919K, placing it at rank #3108 by market value.
Daily trading volume is $1.3K. Swarm (SMT) has moved -18.60% over the past seven days and +3.52% across the last 30 days.
Swarm Markets was co-founded by Philipp Pieper and Timo Lehes. Its early work focused on building a way to trade digital securities alongside crypto assets. SMT launched in August 2021 as the platform’s payment and rewards token. Over time, the project added tools for tokenized assets and decentralized over-the-counter trading, or dOTC. (swarm.com)
A major change in the project’s history came with its acquisition by Inveniam. Swarm announced the planned deal in December 2025, and both Swarm and Inveniam later reported that it had closed. Inveniam works with data for private-market assets. The combination brings Swarm’s tokenization and trading tools together with that data-focused business, though the effect on SMT’s future uses will depend on later product decisions. (inveniam.io)
SMT began as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, a common format that lets compatible wallets and applications recognize it. Swarm also documents an SMT contract on Polygon. A user can hold the token in a self-custody wallet and connect that wallet to supported applications. Ethereum and Polygon are separate networks, so transactions must use the version of the token and network supported by the chosen application. (docs.swarm.com)
Swarm’s dOTC tool uses smart contracts to arrange trades between users. A person making an offer sets terms, such as which asset to give, which asset to receive, and whether the offer is public or meant for a particular wallet. The contract holds the offered asset and completes the exchange when its conditions are met. Version 2 added features such as offers with prices that follow an outside price feed and a screen that matches users with live offers. (docs.swarm.com)
Compliance can be built into an offer. With Swarm’s KYC Select feature, an offer maker can require the other wallet to pass an identity or qualification check. The smart contract can then ask an authorization system whether that wallet is allowed to take the offer. This lets a peer-to-peer trading tool support assets with different access rules. (docs.swarm.com)
SMT’s documented uses include platform incentives, rewards, and governance. Swarm initially set a supply of 250 million SMT and stated that the original plan had no allocation reserved for the team. Its plan set aside tokens for community activity, a reserve, and rewards released over time. Tokens issued under an early vesting arrangement appeared as vSMT until they could be converted into transferable SMT. (docs.swarm.com)
Token holders approved a rewards-policy and burn proposal in 2024 that reduced the amounts assigned to the rewards pool and reserve. Under the rewards framework described by Swarm, eligible dOTC offer makers, holders of certain real-world-asset tokens, and people staking SMT against eligible assets can receive rewards. The amount assigned to a wallet depends on the program’s rules and that wallet’s share of eligible activity. Swarm also publishes records of reward distributions. (docs.swarm.com)
SMT holders can take part in votes about the token, rewards policies, and shared Swarm services. That makes governance another part of its role: holders can help shape some rules of the ecosystem rather than only use the token for transactions. Swarm’s documentation describes fee discounts as a token function, while its dOTC documentation places discounts for paying that service’s fees in SMT in a future upgrade. (docs.swarm.com)
Swarm’s tools serve several groups. Issuers can create blockchain-based products and seek a place for eligible users to trade them. Traders can make peer-to-peer offers instead of relying only on a standard exchange order book. Institutions can use qualification checks for offers that require approved counterparties. Individuals can hold supported assets in a wallet and interact with the platform according to its access rules. (docs.swarm.com)
One example has been SwarmX GmbH’s program of stock certificate tokens and its xGold product. These show how an issuer can connect an on-chain token to an underlying asset and define the holder’s rights and redemption process. SwarmX announced in August 2026 that it would end both product lines, with termination set for September 30, 2026. These products remain useful examples of Swarm’s tokenization work, but their planned end is an important part of the ecosystem’s history. (docs.swarmx.net)
SMT’s role is different from the role of an asset token. A stock certificate token follows terms tied to a particular financial product; SMT supports incentives and decisions around Swarm’s services. That distinction helps explain why activity on the platform does not always require an asset issuer, a trader, and an SMT holder to have the same rights or responsibilities. (docs.swarm.com)
Swarm’s main strength is the way its tools bring several steps into one setting: wallet-based access, smart-contract exchange, token rewards, and checks for qualified participants. The dOTC format also gives offer makers control over terms such as the intended counterparty, expiration, and whether an order can be filled in part. These features can suit assets that need more tailored trading than a simple swap. (docs.swarm.com)
The same design takes time to understand. Users must tell apart SMT, tokens issued for specific assets, and the legal rights attached to each product. They also need to understand which wallet and network an application uses. For issuers and platform builders, a further challenge is keeping product terms and access systems in step with changing rules. SwarmX’s decision to end its stock certificate and gold products shows how an issuer’s choices and regulatory requirements can change the available ecosystem. (docs.swarm.com)
SMT is available on MEXC and Gate, and it can be exchanged through supported Uniswap markets on Ethereum and Base. The trading route determines whether a user connects a wallet to a decentralized exchange or uses an account with a centralized exchange. Access to each service can vary by location. (coingecko.com)
MetaMask can hold Ethereum-based SMT by importing its token contract address. Swarm also documents support for Coinbase Wallet, Ledger, Trezor, and other compatible wallets connected through WalletConnect. Its published Ethereum SMT contract address is 0xb17548c7b510427baac4e267bea62e800b247173; the documented Polygon version has a different address. A wallet holding SMT on one network must be connected to that network to show and use the balance there. (docs.swarm.com)
Swarm’s approach to regulated assets includes identity checks, wallet permissions, and controls that can limit a trade to qualified participants. Its platform documentation says U.S. persons cannot set up a Swarm trading account, while residents of Canada are listed for crypto-only access. These platform limits are separate from the availability of SMT on third-party trading services. (docs.swarm.com)
Rules also apply to the issuer of each tokenized product. SwarmX GmbH stated that regulatory requirements connected with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, along with a decision by its shareholder, led it to terminate its stock certificate tokens and xGold service on September 30, 2026. Its notice sets out separate arrangements for holders to redeem tokens or claim proceeds. This illustrates why the legal terms of an asset token matter alongside the blockchain code used to transfer it. (docs.swarmx.net)
SMT has no established project-wide Shariah compliance status. Its documented functions cover rewards and governance within a platform that has handled different kinds of assets, including stocks, bonds, and gold. An Islamic-finance assessment would therefore need to examine the token’s reward arrangements and the particular asset or transaction involved, rather than treat every use of Swarm as the same financial activity. (docs.swarm.com)
Swarm’s future direction sits at the meeting point of tokenization, qualified on-chain trading, and Inveniam’s private-market data work. The companies have described plans to connect trusted asset information with tools for trading and other financial uses. For SMT, the clearest established roles remain rewards and participation in token-related governance. Any broader role will depend on products and policies the combined business puts into operation. (inveniam.io)
The SwarmX product termination is a turning point for the asset side of the ecosystem. It separates the lasting idea behind Swarm’s technology—using smart contracts and qualification tools for financial assets—from the life of any one issuer’s stock or gold token program. Future developments will show which assets and services make use of that infrastructure. (docs.swarmx.net)
Swarm Markets uses blockchain tools to connect crypto trading with financial-asset tokenization. SMT supports its rewards system and gives holders a voice in certain governance decisions. The project’s dOTC contracts, wallet-based access, and qualification tools show one way traditional finance and decentralized technology can work together. Its next chapter will be shaped by the Inveniam acquisition and by the products built around those tools. (docs.swarm.com)
