Supply and the changing payment model

STORJ is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Storj’s published token reports describe a total supply of 425 million STORJ. The tokens came into use through routes including the conversion of earlier SJCX holdings, the 2017 sale and transfers from company reserves. Storj’s reports have tracked those reserves and token flows separately from tokens held outside the company. (storjtoken.com)

For years, the token served as a way for customers to add credit for storage and for Storj to pay operators who supplied capacity and bandwidth. Storj also accepted other customer payment methods. In July 2025, the company outlined a plan for token buybacks and a later staking system for node operators. The staking system was described as a future phase, with rewards intended to come from purchased tokens rather than newly created ones. (storjtoken.com)

Storj announced a major payment change on September 25, 2026. It disabled new STORJ deposits in the customer interface and said USDC would replace STORJ for those deposits. It also scheduled operator payouts to switch to USDC beginning with the October payout, sent from October 9 onward. The September payout was the last one made in STORJ under the announced schedule. Storj said the underlying token infrastructure would remain in place and that it could revisit the decision. (forum.storj.io)
