Overview
An open network for artificial intelligence
Sentient is a project that brings together open-source artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain-based coordination. Its goal is to help researchers and developers build AI systems that people can inspect, improve, and use together. The project’s token, SENT, is designed to support payments, participation, and decision-making across that network. (sentient.xyz)
At the center of Sentient is the GRID, an ecosystem of AI models, agents, tools, data, and research projects. An AI agent is a program that can use tools and take steps toward a task, such as gathering information or writing code. Sentient aims to make these parts easier to discover and combine. A developer might use an existing model, add a search tool, and build a new agent on top. The wider aim is open artificial general intelligence, or AGI: AI that can handle a broad range of tasks. History & Team
From research project to wider ecosystem
Sentient announced an $85 million seed funding round in July 2024, co-led by Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Framework Ventures. Its early contributors included AI researcher Himanshu Tyagi, researcher Pramod Viswanath, and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal. Tyagi has also been identified publicly as a Sentient co-founder. The early work focused on a central question: how can AI builders share their work openly while still receiving credit and compensation when others use it? (linkedin.com)
Sentient Labs leads technical research and product development. The Sentient Foundation, which formally launched in February 2026, is a nonprofit focused on open-source AI research, developer support, and governance. That division gives the project both a product-building group and an organization devoted to the wider community. SENT began spot trading in January 2026, adding a token-based way for people to take part in the ecosystem. (sentient.foundation)
Technology & How It Works
Building with reusable AI parts
The GRID brings together work from Sentient and other builders. Its directory helps people find projects, while Sentient Chat lets users interact with selected community-built agents and demos. This approach treats AI as a collection of useful parts rather than a single program that must do everything. A task may call for several tools or agents, each contributing a different skill. (sentient.xyz)
Sentient also develops tools that help builders create and test those parts. ROMA is a framework for agents that break down longer tasks and use tools in parallel. Open Deep Search works on questions that require several rounds of searching and reasoning. EvoSkill helps turn a general-purpose agent into one better suited to a measured task. These projects show that Sentient’s work extends beyond the token into software that developers can study and adapt. (sentient.xyz)
Giving creators credit
One research problem for open AI is proving which model someone used. Sentient’s Open, Monetizable, and Loyal, or OML, research explores model fingerprinting as part of an answer. A fingerprint is a hidden pattern placed in a model so its origin or use can be checked later. Sentient’s technical paper describes a system in which model builders, hosts, and verifiers use such checks to support attribution and payments. The paper presents a broader design for tracking contributions and rewarding builders as their work is used. (sentient-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com)
Blockchain plays a different role from the AI models themselves. It provides a shared record for ownership, payments, and governance decisions. The project’s research describes storage, distribution, access, and incentive layers that work together to make AI artifacts available and account for their use. (sentient-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply and distribution
Sentient lists a total supply of 34,359,738,368 SENT. Its published allocation sets aside 65.55% for community-related purposes: 44% for community initiatives and airdrops, 19.55% for ecosystem work and research, and 2% for a public sale. The remaining shares are 22% for the team and 12.45% for investors. These categories show how the project plans to fund builders, research, operations, and early contributors. (sentient.foundation)
The release schedule spreads much of that supply over several years. For the community-initiatives and ecosystem-and-research pools, 30% of each allocation unlocks at the token generation event, with the rest released gradually over four years. Team tokens have a one-year initial lock and a six-year linear vesting schedule. Investor tokens have a one-year initial lock and then vest over four years. Sentient also describes an annual community emission pool set at 2%, drawn from its broader community allocation; unused tokens in that pool are locked at year-end. (sentient.foundation)
What SENT does
The Foundation describes three main roles for the token. Payments let users pay for agents, models, data services, and other AI products. Staking—locking tokens to participate—supports access and governance. Voting gives staked SENT a role in decisions about emissions, treasury spending, and protocol upgrades. In this design, the token connects people who build AI services with people who use and help guide them. (sentient.foundation)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Research, tools, and community projects
Sentient’s GRID page describes an ecosystem of more than 110 partners and 15,000 developers. Its public offerings include a project directory, agent demonstrations in Sentient Chat, and Arena challenges where developers test solutions to difficult AI problems. These activities serve different needs: finding reusable work, trying it in an application, and measuring how well a new approach performs. (sentient.xyz)
The Foundation has also committed $42 million to a program supporting open-source AI builders. The program includes grants for public-goods work and a separate investment track for companies. It offers applicants access to engineering support, computing resources, and a community of developers. Together with the Labs’ research tools, this gives independent builders several ways to contribute beyond creating a token-based service. (sentient.foundation)
For users, the most direct use case is access to AI tools made by different teams. For builders, the GRID offers a place to share models, data, agents, and improvements to existing work. SENT’s proposed role is to help coordinate payment and participation as those pieces are used together. (sentient.xyz)
Advantages & Challenges
The promise and the hard work of openness
Sentient’s open approach lets developers inspect code, reuse tools, and build on one another’s research. Its modular design also allows a strong search tool or specialist agent to contribute to many different applications. The GRID’s directory, Chat interface, and developer repositories give that idea practical forms people can explore. (sentient.xyz)
The same approach creates coordination challenges. Work from many teams needs clear ways to be found, combined, tested, and credited. Sentient’s fingerprinting research addresses part of the credit problem, while its token design addresses payments and shared decisions. Another important task is turning useful research into services that people return to use. These are ongoing areas of development for an ecosystem built from many independent contributions. Where to Buy & Wallets
Exchanges and Ethereum storage
SENT is available on Kraken, Binance, and OKX. Kraken and Binance began spot trading in January 2026, and OKX announced a spot listing later that month. Which services a person can use depends on the rules and availability in their location. (blog.kraken.com)
SENT has an Ethereum token contract. It can be held in an Ethereum-compatible wallet such as MetaMask, which supports displaying ERC-20 tokens. Ethereum transfers use ETH to pay network fees. The Ethereum contract address published in Binance’s listing announcement is 0x56A3BA04E95d34268A19b2a4474DC979baBDaf76; the contract identifies the token when adding it to a wallet or arranging an Ethereum withdrawal. (binance.com)
Regulatory & Compliance
Location and religious-finance considerations
Rules for offering and trading crypto assets differ by jurisdiction. In the European Union, the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA, sets requirements covering areas such as disclosures and crypto-asset service providers. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission has issued guidance on how federal securities laws apply to different crypto assets and transactions. These frameworks shape how token services and trading platforms operate; they do not assign a single worldwide legal status to SENT. (esma.europa.eu)
Access also varies by platform. Binance’s SENT spot-listing announcement excluded users in the United States from those trading pairs, while Kraken lists SENT for purchase through its own service. Sentient’s published token outline explains the token’s distribution and intended uses but does not provide a Shariah certification or designate SENT as halal. A religious-finance assessment would need to consider how the token and any related payment or staking service are used. (binance.com)
Future Outlook
Turning shared research into useful services
Sentient’s next steps rest on two connected efforts: making open AI tools more useful and making participation in their development worthwhile. Its Labs work includes agent frameworks, model-ownership research, and tools for evaluating AI performance. The Foundation supports a broader group of builders through grants and collaboration. The GRID provides the place where these efforts can meet. (sentient.xyz)
As more tools are built and combined, the value of Sentient’s approach will depend on how well users can find capable services and how clearly contributors receive credit. The published role of SENT gives the project a way to link service use, builder incentives, and community decisions, while continued software development will determine what people can do within the network. (sentient-cdn.s3.amazonaws.com)
Summary
Sentient combines open-source AI research, a network of reusable tools, and the SENT token’s payment and governance roles. Its GRID connects builders and users; its research explores ways to credit AI creators; and its Foundation supports further open development. Within crypto, Sentient is an example of a token being used to coordinate contributions to a shared AI ecosystem. (sentient.xyz)
