Overview
BounceBit is a cryptocurrency project focused on putting digital assets to work. Its platform combines parts of centralized finance, such as professional custody and trading services, with blockchain-based records and applications. The project calls this approach CeDeFi. Its products include strategies for assets such as Bitcoin and stablecoins, along with services built around tokenized real-world assets, including U.S. Treasury investments. BB is the project’s token. (docs.bouncebit.io)
BounceBit has changed significantly since its launch. It originally operated its own blockchain, where BB paid transaction fees and helped secure the network. Following a security incident in August 2026, the project decided to permanently retire that chain and move BB to BNB Smart Chain as a BEP-20 token. This change is central to understanding BB today: some uses described in the project’s earlier technical documents belong to its former blockchain. (binance.com)

History & Team
From Bitcoin restaking to broader asset services
BounceBit began by developing Bitcoin restaking infrastructure. Restaking means using an asset already committed to one system to help support other services. The project’s early design aimed to give Bitcoin-linked assets a role in network security while connecting them to yield strategies. BounceBit announced a $6 million seed round in February 2024, led by Blockchain Capital and Breyer Capital. Jack Lu was identified in that announcement as its founder and CEO. The project also named investors including OKX Ventures, CMS Holdings, NGC Ventures, and Matrixport Ventures. (medium.com)
BounceBit launched its mainnet in May 2024. Over time, its focus widened from Bitcoin restaking to asset-management products and tokenized real-world assets. Its Portal serves digital-asset strategies, while BB Prime is aimed at institutional uses for tokenized assets. Investment backers, custody providers, and firms involved in those products have different roles: funding the project is separate from holding assets or providing a financial instrument. (medium.com)
The next major turning point came in August 2026. After unauthorized BB transfers caused by a chain-level authorization flaw, BounceBit halted its blockchain and chose to retire it. Exchanges subsequently arranged a one-for-one move from mainnet BB to the BNB Smart Chain version. (binance.com)
Technology & How It Works
Custody, strategies, and digital records
BounceBit’s CeDeFi model brings several activities together. A custodian holds underlying assets; a strategy may use them in activities such as basis trading or lending; and digital tokens can record a user’s position. Basis trading seeks to capture a difference between related market prices, such as spot and futures prices. BounceBit’s documentation describes BB-tokens as digital representations of positions in supported assets. For its V3 model, it names CEFFU as the custodian of underlying assets. (docs.bouncebit.io)
BB, BBTC, and BBUSD serve different purposes. BB is the project token. BBTC and BBUSD are names used for positions linked to Bitcoin and dollar-based assets or strategies. In the documented model, a user receives a position token when entering a supported product and gives it up when redeeming under that product’s rules. The position token makes the holding easier to record and, where supported, use in connected applications. (docs.bouncebit.io)
The former chain and the BNB Smart Chain move
BounceBit’s original blockchain was an Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible Layer 1. That meant developers could build applications using tools familiar from Ethereum. Its delegated proof-of-stake design allowed BB and Bitcoin-linked assets to be committed to validators, which processed transactions and secured the network. Users could also receive liquid-staking tokens representing delegated assets. These were features of the chain that BounceBit retired in 2026. (docs.bouncebit.io)
BB now exists on BNB Smart Chain, an established network that supports BEP-20 tokens. BounceBit’s documentation lists the migrated BB contract as 0xe0620aBeA429A66Ba69d9a0cdE9aB93dc15bB9c4. A BB transfer on that network uses BNB to pay its network fee. BB’s former job as the gas coin for BounceBit Chain ended with the retirement of that chain. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Tokenomics & Utility
Supply and original allocation
BounceBit set BB’s maximum supply at 2.1 billion tokens, a figure chosen as a reference to Bitcoin’s 21 million maximum. Its published allocation assigned 35% to staking rewards and a delegation program, 21% to investors, 14% to the BounceClub and ecosystem reserve, and 10% to the team. The remaining portions went to a Binance Megadrop, advisors, early incentives, and market making. Different groups received tokens on different release schedules rather than all at once. (docs.bouncebit.io)
BB originally had several linked jobs: paying chain fees, supporting validator staking, funding staking rewards, and taking part in governance. The 2026 move changed the setting for those uses. A BEP-20 token does not pay BNB Smart Chain’s gas fees, and the former BounceBit validators no longer operate its retired chain. The project’s broader product plans may give BB other roles, but those roles are best understood through services that are actually implemented. (docs.bouncebit.io)
BB is also distinct from a claim on assets held in a BounceBit strategy. A user’s position in a Bitcoin or stablecoin product is described through that product’s terms and position tokens, rather than by the number of BB tokens the user holds. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Ecosystem & Use Cases
Portal and BB Prime
BounceBit’s Portal presents strategies for supported assets including BTCB, USDT, ETH, BNB, and SOL. Its website describes smart-allocation tools, limited-term yield products for BTC and USDT, and an on-chain broker service. These offerings show the platform’s main use case: connecting familiar digital assets to managed strategies and digital records of user positions. Each product has its own subscription and redemption process. (bouncebit.io)
BB Prime addresses a different audience. It is designed around tokenized real-world assets and institutional workflows. BounceBit describes an arrangement involving tokenized cash-equivalent products, custody at Standard Chartered, and execution connected to OKX through collateral mirroring. In simple terms, collateral mirroring lets an asset held with a custodian support trading activity without placing the asset directly on the trading venue. BounceBit’s materials identify Franklin Templeton’s Benji and BlackRock’s BUIDL, accessed through Securitize, among the tokenized products in this model. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Together, Portal and Prime explain the project’s range. One side serves digital-asset holders seeking strategy access; the other connects tokenized financial assets with custody and trading arrangements. BB-tokens provide a common way to describe positions across parts of that system. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Advantages & Challenges
What the design brings together
BounceBit’s main advantage is the way it combines services that are often separate. Professional custody can hold an underlying asset, a strategy can use it, and a digital position can provide a record for the user. This structure may also help institutions use tokenized assets as collateral while keeping custody and trading execution in different places. Its published products cover both cryptocurrencies and traditional financial assets represented digitally. (docs.bouncebit.io)
That design has practical challenges. Users need to understand the difference between BB, a BB-token position, the underlying asset, and the rules for redeeming a product. Some strategies depend on custodians, trading venues, and scheduled processing as well as software. The August 2026 incident added a major change to the project’s technical foundation: retiring BounceBit Chain ended its original validator and gas-fee model. The project’s challenge is now to connect its continuing products and its migrated token within the new structure. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Where to Buy & Wallets
BB on BNB Smart Chain
BB is available on Binance and Bybit in supported locations. Both exchanges announced the move away from BounceBit mainnet deposits and withdrawals to the BNB Smart Chain version. Exchange access and available services depend on the user’s region and account. (binance.com)
The BEP-20 version of BB can be held in a wallet that supports BNB Smart Chain, such as MetaMask or Trust Wallet. Select BNB Smart Chain when receiving it. If the wallet does not display BB automatically, the token can be imported using the BNB Smart Chain contract address listed in BounceBit’s documentation. BNB pays network fees when BB is sent from a self-custody wallet. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Regulatory & Compliance
Product rules and Islamic finance
BounceBit says its onboarding uses identity checks, transaction monitoring, and anti-money-laundering procedures. Its website also states that it has acquired a British Virgin Islands investment business license for investment-management services. Requirements can differ between an ordinary BB transfer and access to a managed strategy or tokenized fund. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission has explained that putting a security into token form does not remove the securities-law considerations attached to it. This is relevant to the tokenized financial products in BounceBit’s wider ecosystem. (bouncebit.io)
Islamic finance treats interest, or riba, as prohibited. BounceBit describes Treasury-bill interest and tokenized Treasury yield among its product features. Those interest-based strategies do not align with the standard riba-free requirement for Shariah-compliant investing. BB’s status as a token is a separate question from the structure of a specific yield product; an assessment of its use would need to consider the activity involved. (bouncebit.io)
Future Outlook
A new setting for BB
BounceBit’s direction after the chain retirement centers on CeDeFi products, tokenized assets, and BB’s presence on BNB Smart Chain. Portal and Prime give the project established product areas to develop without running its former Layer 1. The important question for BB’s long-term role is how the token becomes useful within those products and any later services. Its original supply plan remains part of its economic history, while its former staking and gas functions describe the period when BounceBit Chain operated. (binance.com)
The project also illustrates a broader idea in cryptocurrency: digital tokens can represent access to an asset strategy, while custody and trading take place through separate organizations. How clearly BounceBit connects those parts will shape the usefulness of its ecosystem. (docs.bouncebit.io)
Summary
BounceBit began as a Bitcoin-restaking project and grew into a CeDeFi platform spanning digital-asset strategies and tokenized real-world assets. Its BB token has a maximum supply of 2.1 billion. After BounceBit retired its own blockchain in 2026, BB moved to BNB Smart Chain. Understanding the project today means separating BB from its asset-position tokens and viewing its original chain functions as part of its history. (medium.com)
