Trader Joe (JOE) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The chart shows gross modeled releases of every allocation: vesting unlocks, new issuance and reserve distributions, each allocation counted once. These have different meanings; a scheduled release is not evidence that tokens entered circulation or were sold. Review the coverage, sources and assumptions below.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.
Tokenomics & Utility
JOE has a stated maximum supply of 500 million tokens. Its original allocation assigned 50% to liquidity providers, 20% to the treasury, 20% to the development team, and 10% to future investors. The team and investor portions had an initial three-month delay before release. JOE followed a declining issuance schedule that began in July 2021. New token creation under that schedule has ended, although tokens already created can still enter circulation from existing allocations. (docs.lfj.gg)
Governance and fee sharing
JOE holders can participate in governance decisions. An early governance process, for example, gave holders a vote on adding new Liquidity Book pools. Governance provides a way to express preferences about the protocol; the weight and subject of a vote depend on the rules of the proposal being considered. (joecontent.substack.com)
JOE can also be deposited into single-token staking on Avalanche. Under the documented arrangement, part of the fees collected from eligible swaps goes to JOE stakers as USDC. A staker’s portion depends on their share of all JOE deposited in the staking pool. The protocol fee differs by pool and can change, so staking income reflects exchange activity and pool settings rather than a fixed payment. The current staking guide describes deposits and withdrawals without a lockup or receipt token. (docs.lfj.gg)
JOE has also served as an incentive for liquidity providers. The distinction between creating tokens and distributing them matters here: the scheduled creation of new JOE has ended, while previously allocated tokens remain available for ecosystem incentives. Older staking names such as xJOE and veJOE appear in the project’s history, but the current single-token staking guide describes the USDC fee-sharing product. (docs.lfj.gg)
Assumptions
Trader Joe allocated its 500 million JOE cap among liquidity providers, the treasury, the development team, and a future-investor reserve. Published per-second rates ran from July 2021 to November 2023; the dated amounts charted here estimate minting at those rates, while team and investor tokens also had three-month cliffs. New minting has ended, but existing treasury tokens can still fund rewards without a complete published payment calendar, and approximately 10 million treasury tokens became permanently inaccessible. The chart's grouped monthly amounts are estimates rather than observed mints or exact monthly payments, and the available sources do not reconcile them to an October 1, 2026 total supply.
- Liquidity providers — 50% of the 500 million JOE allocation: Releases depend on recipients claiming tokens or on grants being awarded.
- Treasury — 20% of the 500 million JOE allocation: Releases depend on future governance or treasury decisions.
- Development team — 20% of the 500 million JOE allocation: The sources give the amount but no release dates.
- Future investors — 10% of the 500 million JOE allocation: Releases depend on recipients claiming tokens or on grants being awarded.
- Arbitrum STIP conditional JOE incentive match: New issuance depends on network activity, such as staking, so it cannot be dated in advance.
- Liquidity Book rewards using existing JOE: Releases depend on recipients claiming tokens or on grants being awarded.
