Sky (SKY) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The unlock chart above provides a clear visual overview of the Sky (SKY) token release schedule, showing when and how tokens enter circulation across investor, team, treasury, and community allocations. Understanding these tokenomics dynamics is critical for evaluating potential supply pressure, inflation impact, and market liquidity over time — key factors that can influence SKY price performance.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.
Tokenomics & Utility
Sky tokenomics (“Sky tokenomics”) are designed to make the SKY token central to protocol governance and long‑term alignment.
- Governance and voting: SKY is the sole governance token for the Sky ecosystem, with voting conducted through public proposals and executive spells. Delegation is supported so holders can assign voting power to trusted delegates. (sky.money)
- Staking rewards and collateral: In the Staking Engine, holders can stake SKY to earn protocol rewards, delegate votes, and borrow USDS against their staked position. All functions run through audited smart contracts. (developers.sky.money)
- Rewards flywheel: Users who hold USDS can access Sky Token Rewards to earn SKY, while SKY stakers can receive rewards funded from protocol surplus. This creates a two‑token loop designed to strengthen both governance participation and stablecoin utility over time. (skymoney.net)
- Upgrade path: The MKR→SKY upgrade ratio is fixed at 1:24,000. The DAI→USDS upgrade is 1:1. Upgrading is optional but required to use new features like Token Rewards and the Staking Engine. Some exchanges and wallets have supported automated migration. (blockworks.co)
Sky has also modernized how surplus revenue is distributed. Instead of the legacy “surplus auctions” alone, the Surplus Buffer Splitter programmatically directs portions of protocol surplus to several destinations, including the Smart Burn Engine (which accumulates and burns SKY), treasury accumulation of SKY, and staking rewards. This structure gives governance fine‑grained control over buybacks, burns, and rewards in a transparent, onchain way. Independent analyses and news coverage throughout 2025 have described ongoing buyback activity funded by protocol surplus, with public dashboards tracking monthly amounts. (medium.com)
What affects the SKY price? In general, participation in governance, staking yields, buyback and burn settings, USDS adoption, and demand across L2s via SkyLink can all influence perceived value. Because SKY price moves with market conditions and governance choices, most users focus on fundamentals—protocol revenues, RWA integrations, and Star ecosystem growth—rather than day‑to‑day fluctuations. Assumptions
- Supply is uncapped; governance can mint/burn SKY. We set total_supply to null and model only known emissions.
SKY token contract exposes mint function under auth; governance spells routinely mint/burn and Etherscan shows a changing minted total.
- Modeled MKR→SKY conversion as linear from 2024-09-18 to 2050-09-22.
Upgrades are user‑driven (event‑based). Docs specify initial availability (Sept 18, 2024), migration go‑live (May 19, 2025), and a penalty ramp reaching 100% after ~25 years from 2025‑09‑22; therefore we spread conversions uniformly for monthly granularity.
- Legacy ‘mintable vest’ amounts for Sky Token Rewards were scheduled over 2024-10-09 → 2025-05-29 and 2025-03-01 → 2025-05-29, respectively.
Governance listed exact totals but not period bounds; we align to the known switch on May 29, 2025 and typical 182‑day vest cadence used by subsequent streams.
- Pro‑rata amounts for yanked streams computed by exact day share between spell dates.
May 29, 2025 stream was yanked July 24, 2025; July 24, 2025 stream was yanked Oct 6, 2025. We pro‑rate the totals (137.5M and 100.851495M) by elapsed/182 days.
- Early Bird Boosted Rewards claim window taken as Oct 29, 2024 through Dec 31, 2024.
Official communication indicated claim activation and year‑end deadline; we model linear distribution over that window.
