EOS (EOS) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The unlock chart above provides a clear visual overview of the EOS (EOS) token release schedule, showing when and how tokens enter circulation across investor, team, treasury, and community allocations. Understanding these tokenomics dynamics is critical for evaluating potential supply pressure, inflation impact, and market liquidity over time — key factors that can influence EOS price performance.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.
Tokenomics & Utility
The network’s economic design has evolved through on‑chain governance. In 2019, block producers reduced annual issuance from 5% to 1% and retired a large, unused “savings” balance—an early step to tighten supply growth. (cointelegraph.com)
In May–June 2024, the network approved a comprehensive tokenomics update. Key points:
- Supply was fixed at a 2.1 billion maximum, replacing the legacy path toward a 10 billion cap. The change effectively retired about 80% of future emissions.
- Issuance follows a four‑year halving cadence, creating a slow, predictable release over decades.
- Newly created tokens are allocated across clear “buckets,” including RAM market operations, staking rewards, block producers, the ENF, EOS Labs, and infrastructure.
These changes aimed to make the supply predictable, align incentives for core infrastructure, and strengthen long‑term sustainability. (eosnetwork.com)
What the token does:
- Powers transactions and smart‑contract execution (including the EVM).
- Secures the network through staking and governance (voting for block producers and other on‑chain actions).
- Reserves CPU/NET via PowerUp and buys RAM in the chain’s storage market.
After the 2025 rebrand, the ticker changed from EOS to A, but the utility and allocation model remained intact. (staging.docs.eosnetwork.com)
Assumptions
- Genesis activation date used as 2018-06-14.
EOS Authority timeline shows mainnet opened June 10, 2018 and activated on June 14 when 15% voting threshold was reached; activation is when tokens became transferable.
- Pre-2024 inflationary emissions computed via continuous compounding integrals.
Official system contracts specify continuous rates; exact on-chain totals are not summarized publicly. We integrated piecewise across governance change dates and burns; small deviations may remain due to intra-period burns and rounding.
- Block.one vesting total equals the portion that vested before vesting was halted in Dec 2021.
Exact unvested amounts are specified in the 2024 tokenomics MSIG documentation; we subtract from original 100M to derive vested total.
- Post-2024 distributions modeled exactly per MSIG schedules and annual allocation table.
ENF/EOS Nation tokenomics README and ENF blog define the annual rates, recipient splits, and 4-year halving epochs.
- Excluded the 2018–2020 eosio.saving (4%) WPS accrual as a separate allocation to avoid double counting because it was fully burned prior to 2024 and later reissued as ENV in 2022.
Two burns totaling 68,277,906.6221 EOS were executed (2019 and 2020). In 2022 a one-time issuance of an equivalent amount funded ENV; we include the lasting reissuance rather than the transient, net-zero WPS accrual.
- Total supply is capped at 2.1B EOS as of June 1, 2024; inflation halted.
Approved tokenomics MSIG sets max supply to 2.1B and issues remaining supply; ongoing emissions are distributions from pre-issued tokens under vesting schedules, not inflation.
