Kusama (KSM) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The unlock chart above provides a clear visual overview of the Kusama (KSM) token release schedule, showing when and how tokens enter circulation across investor, team, treasury, and community allocations. Understanding these tokenomics dynamics is critical for evaluating potential supply pressure, inflation impact, and market liquidity over time — key factors that can influence KSM price performance.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.

Supply and inflation
KSM is an inflationary token with a target annual inflation of about 10%. Inflation is split dynamically between staking rewards and the on‑chain treasury, guided by an ideal staking rate that adjusts with network conditions. When the staking rate sits near the ideal (often around 60%), nearly all inflation goes to stakers; if it deviates, a portion is redirected to the treasury. This design encourages healthy staking while keeping enough KSM liquid for other uses. (wiki.polkadot.com)
Main utilities
- Network fees: KSM pays transaction fees across the Kusama ecosystem, including Asset Hub. (kiln.fi)
- Staking and security: Validators and nominators stake KSM to secure the network and earn rewards. Unbonding typically takes 7 days. (support.polkadot.network)
- Governance: KSM holders propose, vote, and delegate in OpenGov, a multi‑track system that enables many referenda to progress in parallel with different “origins” and timelines. (guide.kusama.network)
- Coretime: Projects use KSM to purchase Agile Coretime (bulk or on‑demand) to run their parachains. (guide.kusama.network)
These fundamentals—usage, governance demand, staking participation, and developer momentum—are commonly cited as long‑run factors that can influence KSM price narratives, apart from short‑term market swings. (wiki.polkadot.com)
Assumptions
- Supply is uncapped; Kusama targets ~10% yearly inflation under NPoS with a dynamic split between stakers and Treasury.
Official inflation model specifies ~10% annual issuance; split to Treasury depends on ideal staking rate that varies with parachain cores. Governance may adjust parameters.
- Genesis claims modeled as linear from 2019-08-23 to 2020-12-31.
Claims occurred on demand (no public monthly dataset). Early community data indicated rapid early claiming; transfers enabled in late 2019. Linear modeling provides month-level series while acknowledging event-driven reality.
- Cumulative PoS issuance through 2025-10-16 estimated at ~6.9M KSM.
Computed as current on-chain total issuance (~16.9M KSM per Subscan) minus the 10M genesis allocation, assuming the vast majority of genesis claims have been minted by now.
- Treasury inflows from inflation are included within the single PoS issuance allocation (not a separate allocation).
Protocol mints a single inflation stream; the split between stakers and Treasury changes over time but does not create separate issuance mechanisms.
