Decentraland (MANA) Token Unlock & Vesting Schedule
The unlock chart above provides a clear visual overview of the Decentraland (MANA) token release schedule, showing when and how tokens enter circulation across investor, team, treasury, and community allocations. Understanding these tokenomics dynamics is critical for evaluating potential supply pressure, inflation impact, and market liquidity over time — key factors that can influence MANA price performance.
Each color segment in the chart corresponds to a specific allocation group described in the Allocations section below. Underlying assumptions and data models used to reconstruct this schedule are explained in detail under Assumptions, while broader utility insights and token use cases are covered in Tokenomics & Utility.
Tokenomics & Utility
What the MANA token does
- Medium of exchange: Buy wearables, emotes, LAND rentals, and more in the Marketplace.
- Publishing fees: Payable in MANA (primarily on Polygon) for creator collections.
- Governance: Holding MANA, LAND, or NAMES gives you Voting Power in the Decentraland DAO via Snapshot. (docs.decentraland.org)
Issuance, burns, and fees
Historically, MANA used to be burned in specific flows, such as initial LAND auctions and early name registrations. In 2023, the DAO voted to redirect future NAME fees (100 MANA per new name) from burn to the DAO treasury to fund growth. Marketplace fees that previously burned MANA were also redirected to the DAO. The DAO additionally receives a long-term vesting allocation (222M MANA over 10 years starting February 19, 2020). Together, these decisions reflect evolving Decentraland tokenomics designed to support creators and platform development. (forum.decentraland.org)
MANA in governance
Votes are gasless and recorded on IPFS via Snapshot; passed proposals are executed by a multisig “DAO Committee,” with oversight from the Security Advisory Board (SAB). This lets holders of MANA, NAMES, and LAND influence budgets, grants, contract parameters, and infrastructure lists. (docs.decentraland.org)
Factors that can influence perceived value
Community demand for in‑world items, publishing activity from creators, major events, and broader crypto market cycles can all impact attention and liquidity. Long-term, platform growth, activity in Decentraland DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and the health of the creator economy are frequent topics people watch when discussing “MANA price.” (docs.decentraland.org)
Assumptions
- Initial (genesis) supply modeled at 2,644,403,343 MANA.
Widely cited historical figure; official 2017 posts define percentage distribution but not an explicit fixed cap due to originally proposed inflation. Current on-chain total supply is lower due to historical burns and fee-policy changes.
- DAO and Foundation 10-year vestings are modeled as sub-allocations of the original Community & Partners (20%) and Decentraland (20%) reserves, respectively.
DAO/Foundation posts describe 222M MANA irrevocable vestings starting 2020-02-19; these logically originate from genesis reserves.
- Team vesting modeled as monthly linear from 2018-02-17 to 2020-08-17.
Official terms specify 3-year vesting with a 6-month cliff and semi-annual maturity; for charting at monthly granularity we approximate as linear after the cliff.
- Unvested portions of Community & Partners and Decentraland Treasury are modeled as fully available at the MANA activation (transferability) date.
No official vesting schedule published for these portions; treated as treasury holdings available from TGE/activation.
- No ongoing inflation or mining/staking issuance is included.
2017 plan for inflation was later disabled by governance; marketplace/name burn mechanisms were redirected to the DAO and are not additional issuance.
